Polypterus

Polypterus is a genus of freshwater fish in the bichir family. These fish have lungs but no trachea. They are obligate air breathers. Therefore, they must breathe air periodically or they suffocate.

They will accept a wide range of conditions but the different species do have different preferences which should be met if possible. They will all be quite happy as long as extremes in pH and hardness are avoided. In addition, they are escape artists and a covered aquarium is recommended.

Polypterus are carnivorous but will sometimes accept Cichlid pellets. Fresh or frozen food is preferable to live. Additionally, they are normally nocturnal and they will be very shy in bright lighting.
